Two-dimensional echocardiographic evaluation of left ventricular ejection fraction by the ellipsoid single-plane algorithm: a reliable method for ass…

1995

The reliability of two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic estimation of left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) is commonly recognized, but no satisfactory data are available about the accuracy of low or very low EF values determined by 2D echocardiography (ECHO-EF). The purpose of our study was to assess the reliability of low ECHO-EF values obtained using a simple time-economical algorithm such as the ellipsoid single-plane area-length method. Radionuclide angiography (RAD-EF) was taken as the standard of comparison. We studied 59 consecutive patients (31 women and 28 men) referred to our echocardiographic laboratory. Both 2D echocardiography and radionuclide angiography were blindly perf…

Increased exercise ejection fraction and reversed remodeling after long-term treatment with metoprolol in congestive heart failure: a randomized, str…

2003

Background: the effects of long-term administration of β-blockers on left ventricular (LV) function during exercise in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) are controversial. Patients and methods: patients with stable congestive heart failure (CHF) (New York heart association [NYHA] class II and III) and ejection fraction (EF) ≤0.40 were randomized to metoprolol, 50 mg t.i.d. or placebo for 6 months. Patients were divided into two groups: ischemic heart disease (IHD) and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). The mean EF was 0.29 in both groups and 92% were taking angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. In the IHD group, 84% had su…

Evaluation of post-myocardial infarction regional and global left ventricular function by monoplane ventriculography: superiority of right versus lef…

1996

OBJECTIVES To study the significance of serial quantitative regional wall motion analysis, volumes, and ejection fraction findings as well as their prognostic implications derived from cineventriculography in 30 degrees right anterior oblique (RAO) projection in comparison with 60 degrees left anterior oblique (LAO) projection in post-myocardial infarction patients. Ventriculographic left ventricular parameters are accepted surrogates of mortality in myocardial infarction. Nowadays, in contrast to a biplanar approach in most institutions and clinical trials, the investigation is reduced to monoplanar ventriculography. However, it is not known whether the relevance of the two established pro…

Clinical findings of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: results from a multicenter international study

2008

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy consists of reversible systolic left ventricular apical ballooning associated with chest pain. Electrocardiographic abnormalities and the minimal rise of serum cardiac markers are similar to those in acute myocardial infarction, but without evidence of myocardial ischemia or injury. To date, many reports concerning this kind of acute reversible heart failure have been published, but the information available about the management of affected patients is scarce and the clinical data are incomplete. AIMS: In the present study, we report a collection of 40 patients who were affected by Takotsubo cardiomyopathy obtained in a multicentric international study, …

Three-Dimensional Surface Display in Blood Pool Gated SPECT

1994

In 14 patients (4 in good health and 10 with coronary heart disease) a blood pool gated single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) was executed. The transaxial slices of the cardiac blood pool were reconstructed. A three-dimensional surface display was employed for the analysis of the tomographic data. A fixed distance, a fixed threshold (50%), and some different planes of view were employed. The test permitted visualiza tion of the ventricular and the atrial movements in all patients. The right ventricle was clearly seen in the right anterior oblique plane of view. The aortic beating was seen. In normal patients the left ventricle, clearly seen in left anterior oblique plane, shra…
